Hikikomori Media

Postby . . . on Fri Jul 17, 2009 1:18 pm

An annotated list with documentaries and films with hikikomori as either the subject or as a central character, or other related resources (e.g., the videos where you practice looking into a person's eyes, or information about conditions usually associated with hikikomori). I'll try to keep this list updated as people add responses with new items and reviews.

Edit: Newest additions are in blue.

ANIMATION

 • Hikikomori. A hand-drawn animation from Thailand, hypnotic and moving. (MV)
 • Hikikomori. An animation from Jonathon Harris, terrific visual style. (Music, SFX)
 • Hikikomori. A rough for a student animation (UK). (No sound)
 • Welcome to the NHK. Links to thread. (Japanese, subs and dubs in various languages)

For the next two years he refuses to come out or let anyone else in. Hiroshi’s parents are so ashamed by what has happened that they attempt to conceal his condition from friends and family. Inevitably, the household disintegrates. (Japanese, English Subs)

Re: Hikikomori Media - Foolness Review?

Foolness -

There's a thread on AnonIB about some hikikomori-related videos. You have a quick review (see below) that looks like it was in response to a post boxcuttergrrl made, but I guess the original post is gone. Do you remember what movie this was?

Ok, I just rushed the video because it was boring and soul less which from my experience with Japanese shows can be dry and unfulfilling.

I say soul less because there's no context to what the person is feeling which is 50% of what Hikikomoris represent in my opinion.

You're just painted this picture of a guy who's already a Hikikomori so stuff like when the main character acts weird towards a classmate who says they've already graduated, it just seems hollow because you're not sure of the history behind the scene.

I will say that if you're in this for a new perspective of Hikikomoris, I wouldn't recommend it. If you're in this to see the uncomfort that comes with being a Hikikomori, I still wouldn't recommend it. (more on that below) I would say it really depends on whether you approach this for accuracy or treat it as a dull movie with some ups. The ups being only major ups if you've never experienced the scenes before. (You should get an idea both from the synopsis and the first 10 min. of the film although they do not contain the climax)

I will say this though. Since I've experienced most of the scenes in this movie PRIOR to being a hikikomori, I'm personally biased against assuming this is a hikikomori movie and I'm actually inclined to think this is a NEET movie. Also many of the scenes were just off for me by alot. Things like the climax and the ending seem under-represented while things like the early scenes seems to be over-represented. Of course this movie isn't about me though but still they're just so noticeably different in degree if you ever experienced these things that this movie could very well be on the level of most movies. Highly inaccurate but may be trying to play with your emotional strings...except when I treat it as that, it just becomes a dull Japanese movie since it entirely hinges on the viewer being weirded out and shocked by the scenes on the level of an amateur artsy fartsy film. (Note that even if you rush the movie, you really shouldn't have any trouble in connecting the scenes that happened and won't be spoiled unless you've never been treated like this.)

Coincidentally enough, I too had forgotten about the title until yesterday when I was searching for another thread I made here.

This is the HF version of the thread in case you're wondering and as the topic title says: It's "Now I" or Ima Boku Wa

general-discussion-f7/now-i-ima-boku-wa-p-hikikimori-neet-movie-review-t222.html?hilit=ima%20wa%20boku

However from what little I've googled, I've since surmissed that it is a NEET and not a Hikikomori movie.

I apologize for not thanking you for making this thread but I was considering doing that in my reply which had you not asked of this would've been after I wrote an impression and watched all the links. (I also felt I was overburdened as it was, so although this sounds like an excuse, I didn't want to pressure myself in writing the reply until I've actually done it.)

Thanks! There's a lot of information on the other forum, but it seems like messages disappear without reason sometimes — I can't see why boxcuttergrrl would've deleted her original message, so I'm guessing it was some glitch on the server.

In terms of movies, I've also come across two titles, one called Tokyo Plastic (Japanese), and another called Hikikomori (Korean), but I hadn't added them to the list based on their descriptions. Are you familiar with either of these?

Yes, that's fine, of course! Please take your time responding. I've just put simple descriptions hoping reviews would follow in the thread from other people here.

Both. I would say more about being a hikikomori, if a "normal" person was facing murders and delusions all around him he would act differently therefore the entire plot would inevitably be different.

When he was a boy Takumi Nishijou wasn't allowed on a school trip. He drew a picture of the bus and then tore it in two. That same day the bus crashed killing everyone inside. He was traumatised and blamed himself and so became a hikikomori. Fast forward to the present day and he lives by himself in a storage crate on the roof of an apartment building in Shibuya, Tokyo. His room is filled with anime figurines. Lately things haven't been going well, he has schizophrenia and has trouble telling delusion from reality, which dosen't help when a string of murders occur in Shibuya...
